Stody Lodge Gardens

22 May 2019

The Gardens at Stody Lodge now boast over 200 varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas which thrive in its acidic, sandy soil.

The Sunken Garden is a small paved pathway leading off the Main Lawn to the West. It is a beautiful example of how flowers, particularly azaleas, can mix colours in the most outrageous way – oranges, varying shades of purples and pinks, dark reds and scarlets – all blending together to give a unexpected sense of unity as well as an outstanding view of Stody Lodge.

The Secret Garden has enjoyed a large amount of regeneration since 2006 and having moved some of the roses and summer flowering shrubs in 2015 the azaleas that had been restricted have now branched out and grown at an extraordinary rate.

Stody’s signature rhododendrons and azaleas create a firm and brightly-coloured backdrop, giving a feeling of magic and secrecy

The present Azalea Water Gardens have been carefully maintained so that the original concept and layout has been adhered to as much as possible. Almost all the planting for this garden is from self-seeded or layered plants and it is estimated that there are now in excess of 2,000 azalea and rhododendrons.

These areas are only a small part of Stody and we do hope that you will join us in this visit to a fantastic garden which is only open for a very few days every year. To add to our visit, we have organised a cream tea during the afternoon for each person travelling with Grebe Coaches

Please note that there is quite a bit of walking on grass and pavers especially near to the lake which gets quite damp and uneven especially after rain, so care is necessary, those who are less able or need assistance with walking should take care.

As Stody Lodge Gardens open at 13:00 we will pay a morning visit to Holt, one of the best loved Georgian towns in Norfolk is also one of the best towns to visit for shopping if you want something a little different. It’s full of wonderful independent shops, small and large, Bakers & Larners is one of the larger shops in Holt, but it’s almost like a little mini Fortnum and Mason with its “food hall”, wonderful kitchen shop and lots of other lovely little things.

£30.00 pp inc cream tea

Banham Zoo

29 May 2019

Banham Zoo is 50!

When Harold Goymour retired in 1952 after selling a thriving bakery business and bought a farm in Banham as a country retreat, with a view of enjoying country life with his wife Ethel, who would have thought that what started as a mixed livestock, arable and fruit farm would evolve into one of the UK’s most well-known zoos and major tourist attractions in East Anglia. It had small collection of ornamental pheasants and started to take in exotic pets when they grew too large for peoples homes the first of which were two Canadian timber wolves, three Australian dingoes and a Himalayan bear.

The Zoo welcomed its first paying guests in 1968 and now, 50 years later, Banham Zoo is an award-winning family attraction and one of the most exciting wildlife locations in the country, with over 2,000 animals from around the world and set in 50 acres of beautiful parkland and gardens.

So, join us with a visit to a very special part of the Zoological Society of East Anglia, Banham Zoo

Southern Comfort Paddle Steamer Cruise & Wroxham

5 June 2019

We start our day by spending some time in the beautiful Norfolk broad’s village of Wroxham, time to have a walk besides the water, get a coffee or browse the many retail outlets in the village centre.

The twin villages of Wroxham and Hoveton sit either side of the meandering River Bure. Together known as the capital of the Broads, this community is the heart and hub of boating holidays on the Norfolk Broads.

We then make our way to Horning for our afternoon cruise on The Southern Comfort, a luxury river cruiser which runs from the beautiful village of Horning, along the River Bure through the village and out to Ranworth Broad and back, passing lovely old thatched houses, windmills and Norfolk reed beds. Throughout the trip an interesting commentary provides an exciting insight into the area and continual identification of the water birds seen on the broad. There is an ever-present bustle of river traffic with cruisers, yachts and the occasional wherry.

You will be provided with a complimentary cup of tea or coffee during the cruise.

5 June 2019

The Sandringham Flower Show is a very firm favourite in the events calendar, mixing local village flower and produce competitions, trade stands, amateur and professional display gardens and a wealth of arena events.  It is always the busiest day of the year on the estate, welcoming over 20,000 visitors

Sandringham Flower Show is one of the most prestigious horticultural events in the East of England. Now in its 138th year, it is much more than just a Flower Show. It is a unique event offering not only the best in horticulture but also an excellent day out, filled with family entertainment.

From the beginning the Show has been privileged to enjoy Royal patronage and traditionally our Royal Patron attends the Show.

Many of the region’s leading nurseries and horticultural specialists exhibit. In addition to these displays the show features display gardens by leading designers, around 200 trade stands (both horticultural and general), a craft marquee, main arena events, children's entertainment and a military band.

The Royal marquees contain the competitions in vegetables, fruit, flowers and floral art, with the entries grown by local residents; there are also some open classes which anyone may enter. In the amateur’s marquee, local gardening and horticultural clubs enter a judged display competition, whilst the Horticultural Trades marquee features displays by leading nurseries.
